under the rain III
Ethan Caflischâs Under the Rain series extends the themes of his late 2024 exhibition, underwater, in the rain, emerging from a moment of resurfacingâonly to realize the downpour continues. These textile paintings exist in the space between submersion and clarity, between endurance and quiet acceptance.
Each piece is built upon a foundational pairing, framed twiceâonce by canvas, once by pineâestablishing thresholds that define and contain the composition. While fundamentally landscapes, these works are also meditations on optimism, stillness, and progress. Through layered fabric and deliberate construction, Under the Rain reflects the persistence of movement even when the storm does not pass.
In Caflischâs Words:
this work is an offshoot from an exhibition i had in late 2024, titled âunderwater, in the rain.â these works have come after the fact, after coming up for air, realizing the water was still falling and would continue to do so. each piece has a foundational pairing, visible through two forms of framing thresholds - of canvas and pine. ultimately theyâre landscapes, but additionally views of optimism and stillness and progress.
